BAM 311 Business Ethics

Winter 2014 - Siena Heights University

Skills learned:

Throughout this course I learned about a lot of real world ethical situations that can and have occurred in the work environment. I also gained a lot of business knowledge in the different ways of thinking while making decisions as a corporation. I was able to be a part of quite a few discussions in class from differing viewpoints, and because of this I now have a better understanding of many of the ethical choices that are made on a daily basis and how to deal with them.

How I use these skills today:

This was my first business course and really paved the way for me. I was able to build on a lot of the information and ideas that I learned in this course for my future classes. Also through an assignment that was given I was able to look at my life and see how I have dealt with ethical issues in the past and how I plan to do so in the future. The class discussions were where I was able to hear about my fellow classmate’s life experiences and where I was able to really connect with the ideas discussed in the course.

MGT 452 Leadership

Winter 2014 - Siena Heights University

Skills learned:

In this course I learned all about leadership. I learned the many different leadership styles and roles that a leader has. I was able to assess my own leadership strengths and weaknesses through the many self-assessments in the textbook and then work on them during the course of the semester. Using a journal during this class was one way that I was able to track my progress as a leader and to get a better understanding of the situations that I struggled with as a leader. I also created a family mission statement and development plan on becoming a better leader and reaching my goals.

How I use these skills today:

Creating a development plan for this course with a short term (one year) and long term (three-five years) set of goals was very helpful. I am still keeping this plan and changing it as I am meeting my goals. It was also an eye opening class for me. After taking the self-assessments and hearing my classmates in the group discussions I realized that I had a lot more leadership traits than I knew. I am now able to strengthen my weaker traits, while continuing to grow my strengths in leadership.

MGT 302 Management Principle/Cases

Summer 2014 - Siena Heights University

Skills learned:

In this course I had an overview of management and being a manager. I learned about the four basic management functions: planning, organizing, controlling, and leading. Similarly to my leadership course, this course set me up with the basic information that I was able to grow on in my later business courses. I was able to assess my current management strengths, weaknesses, and style. The class activities helped me understand how to be a manger in a group, even if the group is full of other managers.

How I use these skills today:

Developing my own mission statement for my final paper in this course has really changed me and my focus. Taking a look at what matters to you and how you can use the skills that you have been given is a valuable way to make sure that you are always moving in the right direction. Also learning how to present yourself as a manger and a leader is another valuable skill for my professional future.
