SPCH 130 Fundamentals of Public Speaking

Spring 2012 - Lansing Community College

Skills learned:

This was an entry level course into public speaking. I was introduced to a lot of new material in this course and it changed the way that I present in front of a crowd on in a daily conversation. I learned things such as the difference between manuscript, memorization, impromptu, and extemporaneous speeches. I also learned about ways to effectively use visual aids so that they add to your presentation, and not distract from it.

How I use these skills today:

This class has changed me as communicator and public speaker. Because of the skills that I learned in this course I am no longer nervous when I have to give a speech or presentation. I actually volunteer to be the speaker of a group when working in a team. I also understand the importance of managing your time when giving a speech/presentation and the necessary preparations when doing a presentation at different locations.

SPCH 280 Intercultural Communication

Fall 2013 - Lansing Community College

Skills learned:

This was a class that I really enjoyed. I was able to learn about intercultural communication and about the different norms that other cultures have. I also learned about cultural values, world views, interpersonal relationships, and social institutions. Assignments included attending a cultural event which I went to an informational event about the religion of Islam, and interviewing someone who is of a different culture than me. From those two assignments alone I have been able to view the world differently and approach communication differently.

How I use these skills today:

More than anything after taking this course I have had a different view when communicating with a person of a different culture. This course has helped me become a more effective communicator and helped me to understand the way that different cultures think and perceive things differently, which has translated into better verbal and nonverbal communication.

BAM 441 Communication Skills of a Manager

Summer 2014 - Siena Heights University

Skills learned:

This class taught me how to effectively communicate, both as a manager and a leader. I learned about conducting interviews, having meetings, doing presentations, and communicating in the workplace. I was able to learn using real world examples from the textbook and others in my class and apply the ideas to my current and past experiences. Both verbal and nonverbal communication was discussed, along with ways that technology has change how we communicate today.

How I use these skills today:

I have been able to use these skills in my current jobs in multiple applications. I am now able to effectively communicate with both my manager and my fellow coworkers, as well as with customers to better help understand their needs. I was also able to apply some new techniques that I learned about giving a presentation in a real world setting on the job. The skills that I have gained from this course were invaluable for my future professional carrer.

PCM 495 Professional Communication Seminar

Summer 2014 - Siena Heights University

Skills learned:

In this course I learned a lot about the different sources available to you when doing research. I also learned the benefit of networking. The class discussions that I had online in this course helped show me the value that peers in my field can carry. I was also able to do more research into the field that I am currently pursuing, from which I got valuable information. The main capstone assignment was a great opportunity to create a project from the idea to the finalized project.

How I use these skills today:

Luckily I was able to create this portfolio for my capstone project in this class. I will be able to use this, with minor alterations, throughout my career. Seeing as there was quite a bit of freedom on this project I was also able to treat it more like a job, rather than assignment. Even though I did run a little behind, and had to make a few alterations along the way, this assignment and course has better helped me prepare for real world work situations.
