MKTG 140 Introduction to Advertising

Spring 2007 - Lansing Community College

Skills learned:

In this course I was given the assignment to join a group and create an entire marketing campaign for a product that the teacher chose, and then I had to present our campaign to a group of local professionals. I had to research everything from radio, billboard, and television advertising, as well as potential community events that would all fall within our estimated budget.

How I use these skills today:

This was my first college level group assignment and I was able to learn a lot from it. My main takeaway from the course was during my presentation. I gained a lot of valuable information from the local professionals that I still use in presentations to this day. Information such as the amount of information that is shown on a power point slide, to the way that you address your audience so that you can keep their attention.

CITP 110 Introduction to Computer Programming

Fall 2013 - Lansing Community College

Skills learned:

This course was an introduction class for computer programming using python. Following the class assignments I was able to gain a basic knowledge of computer programming. By the end of the course I was able to code a program from scratch and was able to trouble shoot many of the errors that could arise. I learned how to use a program called Wing to do all of my coding.

How I use these skills today:

Though I am a little rusty on my programming knowledge, I plan on building upon my current skills so that I can eventually be able to program mobile applications and possibly applications for use on the web.

CITW 160 Website Design and Development

Fall 2013 - Lansing Community College

Skills learned:

Throughout this class I was able to learn everything from a starting level involving html and css. Using this knowledge I was given files that had to be compiled in certain ways to test my skills from the lessons. There was also a team assignment where groups were assigned and broken into different roles that are involved in creating a website. I was given the html/css coder role and learned a lot about what kind of communication is necessary to create a website with a group.

How I use these skills today:

I was able to learn a few html tricks that I had not known prior to this class that have helped me in future website development. Also during the group project I was able to get some experience in developing a site with others, and while having a specific role, which will be very helpful for my potential job opportunities.

LAS 301 The Adult Learner

Winter 2014 - Siena Heights University

Skills learned:

The main areas of study in this class were the principles of adulthood, lifelong learning, and critical thinking. Also in this class I learned how to write a paper in APA format. In this class we had group discussions daily, a group presentation, a personal presentation, and a research paper. Throughout these assignments and discussions we all learned the ways that we are able to learn and work. All of the activities in this class really helped set a standard for yourself as to what your current level of communication is. It also stressed whole body thinking using the seven methods demonstrated in the book How to think like Leonardo DaVinci.

How I use these skills today:

I had never written a paper in APA format before this class, but I have written several since and I have become very proficient at it. I have also approached my learning differently after taking this class, using the seven methods. Understanding the ways that I learn and work has helped me become a more efficient student and worker.

PHI 329 Technology and the Human Condition

Winter 2014 - Siena Heights University

Skills learned:

In this course I learned about the many ways that technology is changing the way that humans interact with each other and the world. I explored both the positive and negatives of current technologies and how they can affect us both currently and in the future. Through a series of short videos throughout the class my eyes were opened to the effects things that we seem to expect and take for granted have on us and our planet. Also I explored exciting new technologies that are on the horizon.

How I use these skills today:

This class has really changed the way that I interact and communicate with others. After seeing how dependent on technology a lot of us have become I made sure that I really focus on face-to-face human communication. This is a skill that seems to be dwindling in our modern world and is something that needs to be practiced regularly. This class gave me knowledge of our current world more than anything, and knowledge is power.
